Lunch with Congressman Davis

March 29th 2006

We bought a lunch with Virginia Congressman Tom Davis in the House of Representatives Dining Room at a fundraiser for Will's school. The lunch was for two, but Rep. Davis invited our whole family. We left Maryn with a sitter but the rest of us went.

Lunch was scheduled for the week that the Florida Gators were to play George Mason in the NCAA basketball semi final game. Before lunch, we were able to attend a press conference held by Rep. Davis and Rep. Cliff Stearns (from Florida), in which they made a wager on the game. Davis offered a basket of candy from the M&M/Mars line (the Mars family are apparently in VA somewhere) and Stearns wagered a case of Gatorade.

Our lunch in the dining room was quite an event. All of us, except Sean, had the traditional bean soup as our first course. When Davis asked Sean what he was going to tell his grandchildren when he told them about his lunch when he admits he did not eat the infamous bean soup, Sean replied "I'll tell them I had Caesar salad!" Rep. Davis told us a lot about the U.S. Capitol building's history and gave us a tour after we ate. He gave the boys each a copy of the congressional record for the previous day to take to show their classmates. We even got to listen in on some arguments on the floor of the house. We had such a great time.

This visit with Rep. Davis also fulfilled a requirement so Sean could complete his Boy Scout Citizenship in the Nation merit badge and gave him bonus points with his civics teacher!

Just a friendly wager on the UF/GMU basketball game.

Pretty cool! I am sure the grandkids will be saying, "There Grandpa Sean goes again about that Ceasar salad."
